Booking & Timing

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking as soon as you know your dates, especially during high season.

Does the time of day affect the waves?

If you’re a beginner, we use whitewater waves, so any time of day works well. Wind generally picks up around noon, so for more advanced surfers, mornings are better.

What happens if it rains?

We surf rain or shine! The only time we stay out of the water is during a thunderstorm with lightning, which is rare. We don’t cancel lessons for rain — being in the water beats sitting in your hotel room!

Do I need to pay a deposit to book?

No, our booking system doesn’t require a deposit right now. If your plans change, we’d really appreciate a quick email or a cancellation through the link you’ll receive with your booking confirmation.

Skill Level & Family

What’s the minimum age for kids?

Kids should know how to swim. We also have safety vests we can adjust to fit and support their level in the water. We’ve had little surfers as young as 4 years old!

Are the waves suitable for beginners and families?

Yes — Playa Encuentro is beginner-friendly and great for families, with shaded areas on the beach.

What’s the largest group you can accommodate?

We can host up to 25 people at the same time — great for school groups, family reunions, or larger parties.

Getting Here

How do I get to Playa Encuentro?
  • From Puerto Plata area: ~25 min by taxi or guagua. With the guagua, ask to be dropped at HIDEAWAY on the main road, then it’s a 10-minute walk from there. Taxi prices range from $80 US and up depending on your location (could be more from as far as Amber Cove port).
  • From Cabarete town center: 10–15 min by taxi or moto (we can arrange one for you) — $25 US round trip.
  • From Sosúa: ~15 min — $12 US one way.
  • From Santiago Airport (STI): ~1.5 hr by car.
Is taxi included?

We don’t provide the taxi ourselves, but we can arrange one for you that will pick you up.

If I’m not surfing, can I still go in the water?

You can swim, but only in a specific spot, since this is a coral reef beach. Just ask us when you arrive and we’ll show you exactly where it’s safe.

More Questions?

What should I bring to my lesson?

Just a swimsuit and a beach towel — we provide the rest! Applying sunscreen before you arrive helps it absorb into your skin (wet sunscreen can make you slip on the board). We also sell a great facial sunscreen stick in our shop if you don’t have any. Some people also like to wear leggings/rash guard leggings under their swimsuit, since soft-top boards can occasionally cause rash — but that’s optional.

Do I need to bring water shoes?

It’s ideal if you have your own, but if not, we also have some available for you to use.

Is there a bathroom on site?

Yes! We have a private bathroom at our school.

Are there restaurants nearby?

Yes, there are several restaurant options right nearby.
